Latinos in Utah topic of BYU conference March 26

Latino scholars and advocates will discuss the history and current challenges of Latinos in Utah during a conference Friday, March 26, beginning at 9 a.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building on the Brigham Young University campus.

The conference, titled "Latinos in Utah," will begin with a keynote address and will include presentations and roundtable discussions. A fiesta with music and food will conclude the conference.

"We are excited to sponsor this important discussion of the circumstances and prospects for Latinos in Utah," said George Handley, Latin American studies coordinator at BYU. "We hope the conference inspires further interest in and action in behalf of this important community."

Jorge Iber, an associate professor of history at Texas Tech University, will deliver the keynote address titled "A Remote Corner of Aztlan: Mexican Americans and other Latinos in Utah, 1900-2000."

Arturo De Hoyos, BYU professor emeritus and president of Universidad Hispana; Gladys Gonzalez, founder and current publisher and editor of Mundo Hispano newspaper; Chilean artist Jose Riveros; and Leticia Medina of the Utah Office of Hispanic Affairs are among those presenting at the conference.
