Latin and ballroom dancers converge on Provo March 8

Polished Latin dance professionals and some of the best ballroom dancers from around the country will characterize this year’s 2007 United States National Amateur DanceSport Championships, which will be held Thursday-Saturday, March 8-10, in the Marriott Center. Events will take place all day, with featured events occurring at night.

The competition is divided into six sessions beginning Thursday morning, after the DanceSport Amateur Congress on Wednesday, March 8, from 7 to 10 p.m. in 270 Richards Building. The Congress includes five presentations providing a vision of ballroom dance competition.

General public tickets are $12 Thursday and Friday, and $16 Saturday; a three-day package is $37. General student tickets are $9 Thursday and Friday, $12 Saturday and $24 for the three-day package. Tickets for BYU students are $8 Thursday and Friday, $10 Saturday and $23 for the three-day package. All students must present a student ID with ticket for admission.

Youth, amateurs and professionals will compete in two-step, polka, mambo, foxtrot, swing, quickstep, rumba, tango, waltz and cha-cha, with additional formation competitions by pre-teen, junior and youth age groups.

Professionals will compete in Provo's "Battle of the Champions," including the four top United States Latin couples – Andre and Elena, Max and Yulia, Ilya and Nadia, Vaidotas and Jurga. Each couple will showcase a dance Friday night. They will then compete Saturday night in five dances – cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble and jive.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
