Korey Konkol to present annual Primrose Memorial viola recital Nov. 30

The Brigham Young University School of Music’s annual Primrose Memorial Concert, featuring acclaimed violist Korey Konkol, will take place Thursday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Konkol will be assisted by BYU faculty members Jeffrey Shumway on piano and Claudine Bigelow on viola.

The program will include “Lament” (1912) by Frank Bridge, “Scène Andalouse,” Op. 7 by Joaquín Turina, “Penelope’s Song” by Judith Shatin, and two selections from “Saudades do Brazil,” Op. 67 by Darius Milhaud.

The recital honors the memory of William Primrose, one of the world's most distinguished violists who established a premier collection of viola music in BYU's Harold B. Lee Library.

Konkol, who has performed in Europe, Latin America and South America as well as the United States, earned music degrees from Western Illinois University and the New England Conservatory of Music. He teaches at the University of Minnesota, and often performs with the Minnesota and St. Paul Orchestras and has been the principal violist with the Ann Arbor, Peoria and Knox-Galesburg Symphony Orchestras.

As violist in the Twin Cities-based Ensemble Capriccio, Konkol earned the first annual McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Performing Arts in 1997. More recently, he received the American Viola Society’s 2004 Founders Award for his work as the host and chair of the 32nd International Viola Congress.

He is president of the Minnesota Viola Society, which unites students, professionals and viola enthusiasts throughout Minnesota.
