"Kit Carson" finishes Utah-based film series at BYU Dec. 3

"Kit Carson," the action-adventure film starring Jon Hall, Dana Andrews and Lynn Bari, will be shown on Friday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University.

Doors open at 6:30 PM. Admission is free, but seating is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Children ages 8 and over are welcome. BYU dress standards apply.

James D’Arc, curator of the BYU Motion Picture Archive and author of the recently published "When Hollywood Came to Town: A History of Moviemaking in Utah," will host the screening and provide behind-the-scenes information prior to the showing of the film.

The 1940 western, loosely based on the colorful life of the legendary frontiersman, is the final film in the four-month-long emphasis on movies made in Utah in the BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series.

"Kit Carson" was filmed mostly in Utah’s Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border. A movie location made famous by legendary director John Ford, Monument Valley was first utilized in 1925 for the Zane Grey drama "The Vanishing American." Ford made the red sandstone buttes famous in "Stagecoach" (1939) and several subsequent westerns that included "My Darling Clementine," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "The Searchers."

The BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series is co-sponsored by L. Tom Perry Special Collections, the Friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis & Linda Gibson. A complete schedule of films in the series is available online at sc.lib.byu.edu.
