KBYU-TV to air National Geographic Bee May 28

Midvale student one of 20 finalists

Twenty fourth- to eighth-grade students from across the nation, including eighth-grader Jeffrey Bennett from Midvale, will compete in the National Geographic Bee broadcast on KBYU-TV (Channel 11) Sunday, May 28, at 3 p.m.

Answering questions like “The fertile floodplain of the Chao Phraya River is the chief rice-growing region in what country,” Bennett and the other contestants will need to answer every question correctly to win the competition.

Bennett began the competition last November as is one of five million students who participated in contests held at more than 14,000 U.S. schools.

The National Geographic Society developed the National Geographic Bee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. In 2002, he National Geographic Society co-conducted a survey of more than 3,000 18-to-24-year-olds in nine countries in which American students scored second lowest in their knowledge of international geography.
