K. Codell Carter will deliver annual P.A. Christensen Humanities Lecture Feb. 16

Brigham Young University philosophy professor K. Codell Carter will deliver the annual P.A. Christensen Humanities Lecture Thursday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. in B092 Joseph F. Smith Building.

Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Carter’s lecture, “Lewis Carroll vs. Behavioral Science: Can There Be Free Agency or Not?”, will analyze the concept of causation in science and examine the question of whether or not human actions must have causal explanations.

“The idea in science is that every event has a cause,” Carter said. “I’m going to give reasons that this isn’t the case.”

Carter received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Utah, as well as a doctorate in philosophy from Cornell University. He has published a logic text as well as several books and numerous articles in the history of medicine.

The lecture series, sponsored by the College of Humanities, honors the memory of Parley A. Christensen, a well-respected BYU English professor from 1927 to 1965. Christensen, known as not only a teacher and scholar but also as a lecturer and writer, served as chair of the English Department from 1935 to 1955.

For more information about the Christensen lecture series, contact Ron Woods at (801) 422-4622.
