Justin Hackworth's "30 Strangers" exhibit at BYU library during July

Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library announces a new exhibit featuring the work of photographer Justin Hackworth. Located in the Auditorium Gallery on Level 1 of the library, Hackworth’s “30 Strangers” will be open to the public for the month of July.

Everyone is welcome to view the exhibit and attend a reception Friday, July 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the gallery.

For the third time, the topic was mothers and daughters, marking the fourth year of the “30 Strangers” project. During the month of April, Hackworth photographed a different mother and daughter — and sometimes a grandmother — every single day. Participants were selected at random from comments left on a blog post regarding the project. Instead of paying the portrait session fee, those photographed made donations to Provo’s Center for Women and Children in Crisis.

In all, more than 100 participants came from all over the United States to be a part of the project, and all those photographed were strangers to Hackworth. His portrait project and fundraiser began in 2008 when he photographed individuals, one a day, for an entire month, giving the project its name, “30 Strangers.”

Those interested in participating in future projects can follow Hackworth’s blog at justinhackworth.com. For more information about the exhibit, contact Roger Layton, library communications manager, at (801) 422-6687 or email roger_layton@byu.edu.
