"The Joseph Sonnets" to premiere at BYU recital Oct. 6

By composer-in-residence Murray Boren

Brigham Young University composer-in-residence Murray Boren will present a faculty recital featuring the premiere of “The Joseph Sonnets” Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The BYU School of Music faculty instructor composed music for poetry about the life of Joseph Smith written by emeritus faculty member Sally Taylor. Susan Alexander-Boren, soprano, and Michael Turnblom, baritone, will perform the music accompanied by a small orchestra of faculty members.

Boren wrote the music as a set of ruminations on events in the life of the Prophet Joseph Smith, often using some of the actual words written by the principal characters. The two singers reflect the personalities of participants in the events.

Boren received his bachelor of music and master of music degrees in composition at Brigham Young University and his doctorate of musical arts at City University of New York. Boren’s works include nine operas, dozens of songs and choral works, and nearly 100 chamber compositions in addition to large-scale works for band and orchestra.

He has recently composed the music for the opera “The Book of Gold,” which will premiere at BYU Nov. 2-12.

For more information, contact Murray Boren at (801) 422-3454.
