John Wayne's “Sands of Iwo Jima” is Memorial Day tribute at BYU May 26

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections Motion Picture Archive Film Series at Brigham Young University will present the John Wayne classic film “Sands of Iwo Jima” as a Memorial Day tribute Friday, May 26, at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium.

Admission is free, and the public is welcome. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and seating is limited. Children age 8 and older are welcome. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium.

“Sands of Iwo Jima” stars Wayne as Sgt. John M. Stryker, a tough leader of a young squad of Marines. Wayne’s portrayal of the sergeant earned him a Best Actor Academy Award nomination.

The 1949 film, portraying the bloody World War II battle that climaxed with the dramatic raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi, co-stars John Agar, Forrest Tucker and Martin Milner. Also, three of the men who raised the flag during the war re-enacted the scene in the movie.

“Sands of Iwo Jima” is the final film of the 2005-2006 season, and the next season will commence in September. For more information and a complete season schedule, visit sc.lib.byu.edu.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
