John A. Nagl to address Afghanistan, Iraq in BYU Wheatley lecture Sept. 22

John A. Nagl, president of the Center for a New American Security, will be speaking Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall at Brigham Young University. His subject will be “Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife: Lessons from Iraq for Afghanistan and Beyond.”

The lecture is sponsored by BYU’s Wheatley Institution. Admission is free, and the public is welcome.

Nagl is also a member of the Defense Policy Board, a visiting professor in the War Studies Department at Kings College of London, a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies.

He is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Military Academy who served as an armor officer in the U.S. Army for 20 years. His last military assignment was as commander of the 1st Battalion, 34th Armor at Fort Riley, Kan., training transition teams that embed with Iraqi and Afghan units.

He received a master’s degree as a Marshall scholar from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and a doctorate as a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University.
