Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band swings into BYU Oct. 9

The Brigham Young University School of Music will present the toe-tapping music of the Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The concert will feature guest artist Bill Dobbins, jazz piano professor at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.

Preceding the concert, he will present a lecture on jazz piano history and demonstrate jazz piano styles at 4 p.m. in room E-250, Harris Fine Arts Center. As a leading authority in jazz piano teaching, Dobbins has produced several books and films on piano styles used by jazz education programs worldwide.

The first half of the evening’s concert will feature a solo piano performance by Dobbins. Then, he will join the Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band for several numbers.

Directed by Steve Call, the Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band will perform “Lazy River” by American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, “Mama’s Gone Goodbye,” an old Dixieland tune, as well as several New Orleans-style selections including “The Tin Roof Blues.”

The Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band has performed across the country at festivals and conferences. The group features David Kjar on clarinet, Stephen Tobian on saxophone, Benjamin Taylor on trumpet, Bryan Sullivan on trombone, Brady Bills on Banjo, Whitney Morris on piano, Marcus Voght on tuba and Andrew Tolman on drums.
