J. Arden Hopkin to present BYU faculty vocal recital Oct. 7

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty artist J. Arden Hopkin, baritone, will perform a vocal recital of sacred songs Friday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Hopkin will be accompanied by Robin Hancock on the piano.

Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

The recital, entitled “Pilgrimage,” will include selections of sacred songs in English and Hebrew that represent the traditions of Catholics, Protestants, Jews and Latter-day Saints. Hopkin will perform “Selections from ‘Hermit Songs,’” which is based on monks’ annotations made in medieval texts. He will also perform songs by composers Henry Purcell, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Samuel Barber and Carlisle Floyd.

Hopkin is the division coordinator of vocal studies at BYU and teaches studio voice and vocal pedagogy in the School of Music. For 10 years, he spent time as a soloist in several synagogues across the nation. He received his doctorate of musical arts in performance and literature from the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music.
