James B. Mayfield, the co-founder of CHOICE Humanitarian and a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Utah, will present "Iraq: War, Religion, and Democracy" Wednesday, Oct. 20, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building on Brigham Young University campus.
Mayfield and partner Tim Evans founded CHOICE, the Center for Humanitarian Outreach and Intercultural Exchange (www.choicehumanitarian.org) in 1982 upon principles of self-reliance.
"It's very simple," Mayfield said. "We will not go into a village to build a school. But if there's a village that's trying to build its own school, then we will organize an expedition. On the basis that it is really the village's project, we've been quite successful."
Recently retired from teaching, Mayfield is devoting much of his time to the organization that is working with the help of volunteers to improve rural communities worldwide.
