Howard Dodson Jr. to speak at BYU forum Jan. 26

Howard Dodson Jr., chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library, will be speaking at a Brigham Young University forum Tuesday, Jan. 26, in the Marriott Center at 11:05 a.m.

The BYU Broadcasting channels will air the devotional live. Rebroadcast and archive information will be available at byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu.

On Monday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., the day before his BYU forum address, Dodson will visit with host Marcus Smith on KBYU-FM Classical 89's "Thinking Aloud." He will also be featured in a question-and-answer session following his forum address.

Dodson is a specialist in African-American history. He is a graduate of West Chester State College and Villanova University, and then studied at the University of California at Berkeley. He has also been awarded a number of honorary doctorates.

The Schomburg Center has developed into the world’s most comprehensive public research library devoted exclusively to documenting and interpreting African dispersion, history and culture. During Dodson’s tenure, the center’s collections have more than doubled, totaling more than 10 million items. Dodson established a scholars-in-residence program, which has provided fellowships for the more than 100 scholars who have been funded over the last 20 years.

Dodson has published five books as well as articles and essays in newspapers, exhibition catalogs and professional journals. His most recent publication is “Becoming American: The African American Journey.” Most recently, he conceived, organized and directed the development of a major Web site titled “In Motion: The African-American Migration Experience.”

Dodson served as chair of the Federal Steering Committee on the African Burial Ground. He also was a member of the President’s Commission on the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Apollo Theater and serves on the Scientific and Technical Committee of the UNESCO Slave Route Project.

The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
