Henry Fonda adventure filmed in Utah is BYU film series offering March 10

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections Motion Picture Archive Film Series at Brigham Young University will present “Warlock,” a Henry Fonda classic Western filmed in Utah, Friday, March 10, at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Children age 8 and older are welcome.

The film series will also welcome Schawn Belston, a vice president and head of film preservation at 20th Century Fox, as a special guest lecturer at the screening. Belston will introduce the film and discuss the development of CinemaScope and how it popularized the now standard presentation of movies in the widescreen or letterbox formats.

Belston worked on the restoration of many movie classics, including “Oklahoma!,” “The Sound of Music,” “The King and I” and “Laura.”

“Warlock” stars Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark, Anthony Quinn and Dorothy Malone, and was filmed primarily in the beautiful red-rock region surrounding Moab. Directed by Edward Dmytryk, the film follows Fonda as a vigilante sheriff hired by the frontier town of Warlock to protect the town from an outlaw gang. One of the outlaws leaves the gang to become deputy sheriff, which pits him against Fonda.

“‘Warlock’ is one of the great Westerns that operates on many levels and will leave the viewer thinking about it long after the movie is over,” said James D’Arc, curator of the Motion Picture Archive. “Among its many themes are friendship, revenge, law and order and courage. It is not your typical western.”

For more information and a season schedule of the film series, visit sc.lib.byu.edu or contact James D’Arc at (801) 422-6371.
