Health professor Alton Thygerson to deliver BYU devotional address Sept. 28

Alton Thygerson of Brigham Young University’s College of Life Sciences will speak on "Saving Lives!" at the weekly campus devotional Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center. Thygerson is a longtime faculty member in the public health program within the Health Science Department and has been a teacher in Utah and California for nearly 50 years.

The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and at byub.org. Visit byub.org/devotionals and speeches.byu.edu for rebroadcast and archive information.

Born and raised in Texas, Thygerson won the Texas State 100-yard and 220-yard dashes as a high school senior. He attended BYU on an athletic scholarship and was conference champion in the 100-yard dash. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1962 and continued at BYU to earn a master’s degree in health and safety education in 1965 and a doctorate in education in 1969.

He has authored more than 40 books for organizations such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the National Safety Council, the Wilderness Medical Society, the American Heart Association, the Boy Scouts of America and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has written more than 1,200 Deseret News articles on health and safety topics. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine.
