Guitarist Javier de los Santos in free BYU guest recital Nov. 12

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents guitarist Javier de los Santos in a guest recital Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Museum of Art. This event is free.

The award-winning guitarist will perform eight numbers mostly by Latin American composers, including Manuel M. Ponce, Joaquin Turina and Francisco Tarrega. The program will have an intermission and will end with “Asturias (Leyenda-Preludio)” by Isaac Albeniz.

De los Santos was the first-place winner of the 2009 Denver Classical Guitar Society Solo Debut Competition. He began his music studies in 1998 in Zacatecas, Mexico, and graduated with a degree in guitar performance from Colorado Mesa University in 2006.  He has also earned a master’s degree from the University of Denver.

He has performed extensively in different locales, including the XV Semana Cultural de Zacatecas in Zacatecas, Mexico, and various recitals and performances in Mexico, Spain, Maine, Texas and Colorado.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
