Guest pianist Jason Hardink plans BYU recital Jan. 12

Brigham Young University’s School of Music will present guest pianist Jason Hardink for a free piano concert Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Hardink, the principal keyboard artist for the Utah Symphony, will be performing “Schubert and the Second Viennese School.”

The concert will begin with Franz Schubert’s Impromptu in F Minor, Opus 132, No. 1 followed by five numbers from Arnold Schoenberg’s Klavierstück, Opus 23.

After an intermission, Hardink will continue playing Schoenberg, with his Sechs Kleine Klavierstücke, Opus 19, and will finish with Schubert’s Sonata in G Major, Opus 78, D. 894.

Hardink is also artistic director of the NOVA Chamber Music Series. Much sought after as a chamber musician, he has appeared at the Grand Teton Music Festival, Music on the Hill and the Cascade Head Chamber Music Festival. He is strong advocate for new music and served as the pianist for the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble for three seasons.

Hardink is a native of North Smithfield, R.I., and studied music as an undergraduate at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He went on to receive his master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees in piano performance from Rice University as a student of Brian Connelly.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
