Guest oboist Nancy Ambrose King to present BYU recital Oct. 19

Brigham Young University’s School of Music welcomes guest oboist Nancy Ambrose King for a recital Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Tickets are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 422-4322 or at performances.byu.edu for $9 or $6 with student ID.

Accompanied by Jeffrey Shumway on piano, King will perform the Sonata No. 3 for Oboe and Continuo by Filippo Prover, “Etudes pour le Hautbois” by Gilles Silvestrini, “Impromptu” by Jean-Michel Damase, the Concerto in C Major, F VII no. 6 by Antonio Vivaldi and “Morceau de Salon” by Johann Kalliwoda.

Described by “American Record Guide” as “a lovely player with a tone that surpasses that of most other American oboe soloists,” King has appeared as a recitalist throughout the United States and abroad. She has also released various CD albums featuring solo performances and recordings with other professionals.

The first-prize winner of the Third New York International Competition for Solo Oboists in 1995, King has also taught and performed in the Sarasota, Bowdoin and Hot Springs Music Festivals, as well as Strings in the Mountains of Steamboat Springs.

She is currently associate professor of oboe at the University of Michigan and first vice president of the International Double Reed Society. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in music, she also received her master’s degree in music and doctorate in musical arts from the Eastman School of Music.
