Guest bassist Corbin Johnston in BYU recital Jan. 25

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents guest bassist Corbin Johnston and pianist Melissa Livengood in "A Schubert Recital" on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Johnston and Livengood will perform a variety of Franz Schubert's pieces including the Sonata Opus 137 No.1, D. 384, five songs from "Winterreise" and the Sonata D. 821, "Arpeggione."

Johnston has studied with renowned bassist Lawrence Wolfe and Edwin Barker. He has performed in principal positions in the Charleston, Charlotte and Utah Symphonies.

He has also made many chamber music appearances throughout the United States including the New Hampshire Music Festival, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, the Vail series at Denison University and the University of Maryland.

Livengood received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano from the Catholic University of America. She has spent most of her career working with singers. She has worked with the French baritone Martial Singher, the Tulsa Opera's young artist program and Hank Hammett in the Morelia Music Festival. She is currently working as a vocal coach and chamber musician.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
