Guest artist Christian Wolff subject of concert, symposium at BYU March 8-10

The Christian Wolff Trio with Larry Polansky and Kui Dong and Brigham Young University’s Group for Experimental Music will perform Wolff’s “Exercises” Friday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall as part of the Christian Wolff Symposium.

BYU’s Group for Experimental Music will also perform Thursday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Karl G. Maeser Building.

A symposium on the music of Wolff will precede the concerts Wednesday, March 8, at 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, March 9, at 9:15 a.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium.

Admission is free to all events and the public is welcome to attend.

Wolff is the only living member of the highly influential New York School of composers. In the Friday concert, Wolff will be performing in trio with algorithmic music pioneer Polansky and Beijing-born composer Dong.

The trio will be joined by Group for Experimental Music, directed by Christian Asplund, for a performance of Wolff’s partially improvised “Exercises.”

The “Exercises” were composed in the 1970s and are an example of open instrumentation using a variety of instruments.

Group for New Music is a loose collective of musicians dedicated to performing music by living composers, as well as some classics of the 20th and 21st century repertoire. They also perform experimental, improvised and indeterminate music.

For more information, contact Christian Asplund at (801) 422-3688.
