Group for New Music, Experimental Music plan Oct. 8 recital

Group for New Music and Group for Experimental Music from Brigham Young University’s School of Music will perform Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The avant-garde groups, directed by Christian Asplund, will perform such selections as “Knee Play 2” from “Einstein on the Beach” by Philip Glass featuring John Kovalenko on violin, “Time and Speech Series” by Christian Asplund, “Maknongan” for tuba by Giacinto Scelsi featuring Joseph Jensen on tuba and “Excerpts from Sunset with Pink Pastoral” by Christian Asplund.

Group for New Music, founded about 20 years ago by BYU professor Michael Hicks, plays avant-garde music that has been composed and written down, while Group for Experimental Music, organized by Asplund a year ago, improvises most of what it plays. Both groups use extended technique, which includes using instruments in ways they are not usually used.

“It is an attempt to discover new sounds and new ways of organizing sounds,” said Asplund. “The main skill is listening and contributing sounds that will add to the musical texture.”

For more information, contact Christian Asplund at (801) 422-3688.
