Garrick Woods plans unique cello recital at BYU Jan. 19

The Brigham Young University School of Music will present cellist Garrick Woods in a recital, “No Pianos Allowed,” Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The event is free. He will be assisted by BYU violin professor Alex Woods.

“Pianists are definitely allowed to attend the event,” Garrick Woods said.

“The concert will feature Bach’s Suite No. 4 on the original cello,” he continued, noting that the cello in Bach's time was very different than its modern cousin, and using the original instrument brings clarity to some of the mysteries of the cello suites.

The program will also feature works by composers who were inspired by Bach’s cello suites. Woods will also perform George Crumb’s Sonata for Solo Violoncello and Zoltan Kodaly’s Duo fur Violine und Violoncello.

“I think that those who love the music of Bach will not want to miss this opportunity to hear his music the way it was originally intended to be played,” said Woods.

He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and has participated in workshops and master classes with Janos Starker, Carter Brey and Yo-Yo Ma. He has performed widely as a soloist, chamber musician and as a member of the Tucson and Missouri Symphony Orchestras.
