French artist to explain stencil illumination at BYU Nov. 3

A special guest from France will give a lecture on the art and technique of stencil illumination on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 9 a.m. in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections section of the Harold B. Lee Library.

Richard Leray is a master craftsman in the medieval art of stencil illumination. The art form has recently been rediscovered by artists, and Leray will lecture on "Illuminating the Human Story: Myths and Realities of Stencil Illumination."

Stencil illuminations were created when calligraphy was the medium used for publishing books. Quills, brushes, glues and natural pigments were tools used to develop this art form.

Leray's work has been displayed throughout Europe and has received awards from the French and Israeli arts communities. He is also the first to create an illuminated page for the Book of Mormon.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
