Free acoustic demonstration at BYU's Eyring Science Center Oct. 17, Nov. 18

Brigham Young University’s Acoustics Research Group is sponsoring a show on Monday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. in the Eyring Science Center. The free show will feature student demonstrations on resonance, waves and decibels. A second show is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 18, also at 6 p.m. The community is welcome to attend both events.

In addition to the demonstrations, visitors will be invited to stick around for a tour of BYU’s anechoic chamber — a room covered in foam wedges used to absorb sound when making measurements.

BYU professor Kent Gee, an adviser who works with the group, said the show will be exciting for scientists and non-scientists of all ages.

“The audience gets to see an enormous slinky, experience sound in outer space, and see dancing flames and exploding balloons,” he said. “It’s a great way to help kids get excited about science.”

This event is sponsored by the BYU Student Chapter of the Acoustical Society of America, the BYU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Tickets are free but should be reserved ahead of time online at acoustics.byu.edu/outreach.
