Four student dancers' work featured at Senior Showcase April 1-2

The Brigham Young University Department of Dance presents "Select Sojourns: Dance Senior Showcase" Thursday and Friday, April 1-2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre, 166 Richards Building.

The performance is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The showcase will feature the choreographic work of four seniors graduating in dance: Mark Baker, Jeremy Wengreen, Ashley Hoopes and Andrea Page.

"These pieces represent some of the senior seminar projects for this semester," said faculty advisor Cathy Black. "The students choreograph, and they recruit their fellow students to dance."

The showcase will feature two modern dance works, as well as pieces by Baker and Wengreen, which Black describes as a fusion form of two genres, modern and ballroom.

Hoopes has created a piece that illustrates different strengths she has found in several of her peers and how they have influenced her. Page will also appear as soloist in the work which is based on two poems by Edgar Allen Poe.

Black said the senior project is a capstone experience designed for students to demonstrate their understanding of performance, technique and composition.

"I think this performance will be very artistic, as opposed to just entertaining," Black said. "Audiences will see quality work. This is a stop along the way on each of these four people's artistic journey, and every one of these pieces will be fine works of art."
