Folklife specialist to discuss film archiving at BYU lecture Feb. 6

The Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library will host Guha Shankar, folklife specialist in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, for this year’s Wilson Folklore Archive Founder’s Lecture Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in the library auditorium.

Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

Shankar’s presentation will be called “Re-visioning the Past: A Folklorist in the Film Archives.” He will also show rare film materials from the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution.

Shankar uses his background as a visual anthropologist and his experience in producing educational media to examine the challenges of managing, preserving and providing access to archival film materials.

The Wilson Folklore Archive was founded by BYU professor William A. Wilson, who took a few boxes in his office and created a folklore collection containing more than 100,000 items. The archive, which is now part of the L. Tom Perry Special Collections, focuses on preserving folklore about families, religious life, university students and regional life in the Intermountain West.
