"First Look" premiering Feb. 6 on BYU networks will share student films, animation

Brigham Young University media arts and animation students will share their films and filmmaking experiences in BYU Broadcasting’s new program, “First Look,” airing Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 9 p.m. on the BYU channels.

Produced by BYU media arts students, “First Look” gives students in BYU media arts and animation programs an opportunity to showcase their work to wide audience while discussing the impact the filmmaking experience had on their education. The premiere episode will feature two student-produced dramatic narratives.

Noted for its beautiful cinematography, “Violette” tells the story of a young girl dealing with isolation and her unusual encounter with a shepherd. The film recently premiered at the Santa Monica Film Festival and earned an honorable mention at the 2008 LDS Film Festival.

The second film, “The Loss of a Wrestling Match,” is a short, semi-autobiographical piece about a high school student’s discovery of perfection and failure. It premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

“First Look” will air a new episode each week, featuring student films of different genre and themes, including adaptations of the scriptures, documentaries, comedic narratives and animated films. In addition to the Feb. 6 premiere, the first episode will be rebroadcast three times during the month of February.

BYU research: Mega wildfires can actually be a good thing

November 04, 2025
BYU professor Sam St. Clair is the principal investigator on the first study to show positive impacts of megafires (fires greater than 100,000 acres) across different forest types. Megafires can help some forest communities thrive — especially in areas where chronic browsing by elk, deer, and livestock has hindered tree regeneration, a widespread issue that often leads to forest regeneration failure.
