A new Brigham Young University College of Nursing Professorship, sponsored by the Mary Ellen Edmunds Nursing Endowment for the Healer’s Art, was recently announced by Dean Beth V. Cole.
Lynn C. Callister is the first recipient of the professorship, which honors faculty for excellence in scholarship and student mentoring. Commitment to the college and its mission, as well as outstanding citizenship and teaching are also hallmarks of the honor.
“The College of Nursing is pleased to have this distinguished and established scholar as part of the faculty and honors Dr. Callister for her dedication and service,” said Dean Cole.
Callister focuses her research on women’s health. She has conducted numerous studies on international women’s health and is an advocate of health care improvement throughout the world. Her bimonthly column in MCN: The American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing specifically addresses global health issues.
For her efforts with women’s health in Russia, she was named a U.S. Fulbright Scholar and subsequently worked on site with the St. Petersburg State Medical Academy in the spring of 2004.
Callister became a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2003, the highest honor in the nursing profession. Also, in 2004, Callister presented at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, a conference that drew representatives from more than 100 nations to discuss the importance of women’s basic health care.
In 2007, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses honored Callister with their highest award, the Distinguished Professional Service Award for her outstanding contributions to women’s health.
