"Pilgrimage to the Holy Land: The Prints of David Roberts" will be on exhibit through Feb. 15, 2003, at the BYU Museum of Art. This exhibit features exquisite hand-colored lithographs, clothing and memorabilia related to pilgrimages to the Holy Land in the 19th century. Admission to this exhibit is free. "Past Tense: A Contemporary Dialogue" is on exhibit at the BYU Museum of Art now through May 3, 2003, featuring New York artists Valerie Atkisson, Lane Twitchell and Clara Williams, all recipients of the prestigious Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant. The exhibit considers the way history continues to influence our western identity. Admission to this exhibit is free. The BYU Museum of Art's permanent collection, "150 Years of American Painting," which includes art from the Hudson River School of the Urban Realists, is on display. "Artful Tales," a storytelling event, will continue every Monday night at the museum. Families and community groups are invited to the 7 p.m. session, and BYU Family Home Evening groups are welcome at the 8 p.m. session. Admission is free. The Museum of Art is offering drawing classes for young artists ages eight through sixteen. These classes are specially designed for students interested in improving drawing skills through practice and learning appreciation of works of art in the museum, either as part of the permanent collection or in special exhibitions. The museum now has extended hours and will be open Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 1

Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, "Crazy for You" by George and Ira Gershwin recreates the 1930s musical-comedy era where everybody sings, everybody dances and everybody loves the music. With 20 of the greatest songs ever written for Broadway or Hollywood-"I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable You" and "Someone to Watch Over Me"-who could ask for anything more? Directed by Marion Bentley, "Crazy for You" will be performed Saturday (Feb. 1). Saturday, Feb. 1

The Grammy-nominated St. Petersburg Quartet featuring musical numbers by Beethoven, Nadarejshvili and Prokofiev will perform as guests of the BYU Performing Arts Series in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at $9 for the general public and $3 off with a student or faculty ID are available in the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac. They will also offer a free master class on Saturday (Feb. 1) at 2 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 4 and 5

The BYU Singers, Concert Choir, Men's Chorus and Women's Chorus will come together for the dynamic Winter Choirfest at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 6-8

Three encore performances of "Ladyhouse Blues" by Kevin O'Morrison and directed by Laurie Harrop-Purser will be performed in the Margetts Theatre at 7:30 p.m. "Ladyhouse Blues" is the poignant story of five women living under one roof in St. Louis waiting for their men to return home from World War I. "Ladyhouse Blues" chronicles the parallel changes in the lives of these women and in America's destiny. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8

Brigham Young University's MDT Showcase will highlight talented Music/Dance/Theatre students through song and dance, bringing the best of Broadway to BYU. The MDT Showcase will be performed twice each night in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7 and 9 p.m. Tickets at $9 for the general public and $3 off with a student or faculty ID are available in the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac.

Saturday, Feb. 8

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents the American Piano Duo featuring Jeffrey Shumway and Del Parkinson in the Madsen Recital Hall at 4:30 p.m. (not 7:30 as previously listed in the Fine Arts brochure.) Admission to this performance is free.

Tuesday, Feb. 11

The School of Music at Brigham Young University welcomes guest artists Julia Heinen, clarinet, with Shari Raynor, piano. Heinen and Raynor began playing as a duo in 1997 and have since performed more than 150 concerts throughout the United States. They will perform in the Madsen Recital Hall at BYU at 7:30 p.m. Admission to this performance is free.

Wednesday, Feb. 12

Brigham Young University's Group for New Music will perform a collection of contemporary works at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission to this performance is free.

Wednesday, Feb. 12 through Saturday, Feb. 22

Once-upon-a-time meets once-upon-a-stage in this enchanting collection of tales from the Brothers Grimm in "Grimm Tales," performed by BYU's Young Company. Adapted by Carol Ann Duffy and directed by Megan Sanborn Jones "Grimm Tales" will be performed in the Nelke Experimental Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at $12 for the general public and $3 off with a student or faculty ID are available in the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac. The Brigham Young University School of Music presents the Orpheus Winds Quintet in concert featuring BYU faculty artists April Clayton, flute; David Randall, clarinet; Laurence Lowe, horn; Geralyn Giovannetti, oboe and Christian Smith, bassoon. Admission to this performance at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall is free.

Thursday, Feb. 13

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty member J. Arden Hopkin, baritone, will present a vocal recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Museum of Art Auditorium. Admission to the performance is free.

Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 13-15

A diverse Theatre Ballet performance featuring new works that will entertain both purists and those who enjoy the cutting edge will be featured in "Ballet in Concert: Classical vs. Contemporary." Guest choreographer Jose Costas creates a new dramatic ballet with fabric interwoven in movement. "Ballet in Concert" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Critically acclaimed soprano Erie Mills dazzles the audience with her sparkling coloratura voice, captivating personality and vivid portrayals of operatic roles. Mills will premiere "Song of Songs" by Kenneth Frazelle, commissioned by BYU's Barlow Endowment for Music Composition, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall and will be accompanied by pianist Jeffrey Peterson. Thursday, Feb. 20

The BYU faculty brass quintet Brassworks, featuring David Brown, trumpet; David Blackinton, trumpet; Laurence Lowe, horn; Daniel Bachelder, euphonium; and Steve Call, tuba, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission to this performance is free.

Thursday, Feb. 20

KBYU-FM, Classical 89, presents "Music from the MOA." The 100th anniversary of Hugo Wolf, one of the greatest composers of the German Art Song, will be celebrated in this evening of "Music and Conversation." The event is free, and will take place at 7 p.m. in the BYU Museum of Art Auditorium.

Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 20-22

Friday, Feb. 21

Irene Peery-Fox and Barbara Allen will perform a spectacular concert on duo piano at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission to this performance is free.

Monday and Wednesday, Feb. 24 and 26

Brigham Young University will be host to the Young Artists of Voice, an annual intensive voice competition for vocal majors at BYU. The result of this competition will be the naming of the BYU Singer of the Year. This event will encompass two days of competition. The first round will be Monday (Feb. 24) at 5 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The second round will be Wednesday (Feb. 26) at 7:30 p.m., also in the Madsen Recital Hall. Tuesday, Feb. 25

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty member Geralyn Giovannetti will present an oboe recital at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Wednesday, Feb. 26

Prize medals at both the Tchaikovsky and Chopin International Piano Competitions have brought Kevin Kenner international acclaim. Kenner will perform at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Thursday, Feb. 27

The Utah Symphony visits Brigham Young University performing Robertson's Prelude, Sherzo and Ricercare; Mozart's Symphony No. 34; and Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra. The Utah Symphony will perform with Keith Lockhart conducting at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1

The 20-member Dancers' Company, with artistic director Caroline Prohosky, fuses energy with imagination in "An Evening of Unconventional Theatre" creating illusions and visions which reveal new dimensions of our astonishing world.
