Family History Technology subject of BYU workshop March 25

The Brigham Young University Computer Science Department will host its fourth annual Family History Technology Workshop Thursday, March 25, from 8:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Conference Center northeast of the Marriott Center on the BYU campus.

The workshop provides a forum for discussion on current and emerging technology that supports family history and genealogy.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. The workshop costs $60.

David Ouimette, the information architect for the Family and Church History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will give the keynote address.

He has been involved in family history for more than 20 years, including personal and commissioned research, local and national lectures, genealogy software development and product management.

Other panel discussions and technical presentations will focus on topics such as data modeling extraction, optical character recognition, visualization and document and image processing.

The workshop will end with a dinner banquet beginning at 6:15 p.m. Paul Allen, managing partner of Infobase Ventures, will give a predinner speech. Allen has worked as CEO of Infobases Inc. and Ancestry.com.

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
