Fall BYU Choir Showcase planned for Sept. 23-24

The annual Brigham Young University Choir Showcase will take place Thursday and Friday, Sept. 23-24, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. The showcase will feature the BYU Singers, Concert Choir, Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus.

Tickets are $6 and are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at byuarts.com.

The concert will primarily consist of religious pieces in classical and contemporary styles.

The BYU Singers have toured extensively and returned last summer from a tour around the United States. The ensemble is led by Ronald Staheli. They will be performing three songs by Dominick Argento, Steven Sametz and L.J. White.

The BYU Men’s Chorus is the largest collegiate male choir in the United States, with origins reaching to 1901. It is conducted by Rosalind Hall. They will be performing “O Be Joyful” by John Rutter, “The Pasture” by Randall Thompson and “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks” by Howard Helvey.

Jean S. Applonie conducts the BYU Women’s Chorus, which is well-known for its beautiful sound ranging from quiet unison arrangements to large, majestic pieces. The ensemble recently released its first CD recording on Tantara Records. They will be singing “Psalm 100,” “Under the Willows” and “Shoo Fly Pie & Apple Pan Dowdy.”

The Concert Choir, which is made up of 90 advanced student-singers, is also conducted by Rosalind Hall. They will be performing “O Praise God in His Holiness,” “Psalm 23” and “Another Spring.”

The concert will conclude with a combined song with all four groups, “Now Glad of Heart” by Keaton Lee Scott.
