"Eye on the Y: Special Edition" highlights ideas, inventions and breakthroughs at BYU

Brigham Young University researchers have surprised the scientific community with an evolutionary discovery, engineers at BYU have designed beams that are stronger yet lighter than steel, and BYU researchers have invented a tool that welds steel without an open flame.

These stories and three additional ideas, inventions and breakthroughs recently discovered at BYU will premiere in August on KBYU-TV and BYU-Television in the latest edition of "Eye on the Y: Special Edition."

"'The Eye on the Y: Special Edition' series is a mentored-student project. It is produced with a mixture of students and professionals giving students hands-on, professional experience," said Scott Wilhite, writer/producer for "Eye on the Y: Special Edition."

Hosted by BYU alumnus Bruce Lindsay, segments include BYU researchers surprising the scientific community with an evolutionary discovery about walking sticks in "DNA Code Breakers," BYU professors reformulating the way students learn chemistry with Virtual Chem Lab in "Reformulating Science" and engineers at BYU designing beams called IsoTruss that are extremely strong, yet amazingly light in "Stronger Than Steel."

"Eye on the Y: Special Edition" also highlights the number-one rating BYU has for turning research money into actual inventions in "Tech Transfer," an update on the PACE donation and the supercomputer software that is giving BYU students an accelerated education in "Designing Engineers" and BYU researchers inventing a tool that welds steel without an open flame, called friction stir welding, in "A More Perfect Union."

"'Eye on the Y: Special Edition' exists solely to help BYU alumni and supporters feel connected with the university, building a strong sense of affinity. It accomplishes this by showcasing stories, topics and achievements significant to the growth and prestige of BYU," Wilhite said.

"Eye on the Y: Special Edition" will air on KBYU-TV on Aug. 17 at 2:30 a.m., Aug. 25 at 9:30 p.m. and Sept. 20 at 3:30 a.m. BYU-Television will air the series Aug. 8 at 9 p.m., Aug. 14 at 3 a.m., Aug. 18 at 9 a.m., Aug. 23 at 12 a.m., Aug. 24 at 1:30 a.m., Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. and Aug. 30 at 2:30 a.m.
