European experts gather for worldwide conference at BYU Sept. 27-28

Other activities planned throughout the year

In 2012-2013, BYU's Center for the Study of Europe will celebrate its tenth anniversary as one of 11 National Resource Centers for Europe funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

CSE will kick off its celebration Thursday and Friday, Sept. 27-28, with a conference, "Europe in a Nutshell: Will it Crack?" The conference is structured primarily for BYU students, and will include nine sessions and expert panels designed to inform students about some of the most important topics in contemporary European affairs.

Thursday’s keynote speaker will be John J. Hamre, president and CEO of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He will address an audience Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitor's Center and will discuss Europe's evolving role in the 21st century.

“We’ve considered both the passionate and the more passive student of European politics in planning this conference,” said Wade Jacoby, CSE director and professor of political science. “There will be something of interest for all.”

More information on the conference schedule is available at europe.byu.edu.

Over the last decade, CSE has served BYU students and faculty, as well as the surrounding community and Mountain West region. By investing more than $100,000 in community outreach and K-12 activities, it has brought European experiences to countless educators and students of all grade levels.

The center has also awarded more than $100,000 in research grants to about 50 BYU faculty, leading to research visits all across Europe and many published scholarly articles and books. It has supported the creation of new courses, brought to campus dozens of speakers and underwritten the purchase of tens of thousands of dollars in resources for the Harold B. Lee Library.

Finally, CSE has provided more than $1 million in scholarships to more than 100 BYU students from almost every discipline. These scholarships have helped create a generation of internationally minded professionals and scholars.

With a decade of success behind it, CSE now looks forward to become the leading regional resource on all things European. As part of this objective, and as an anniversary celebration, it is introducing a host of new events and activities this year.

Community members, faculty and students are invited to participate in the September conference, monthly Café CSE conversations, Celebrate CSE Week in the spring, K-12 workshops throughout the year, the Go Europe Giveaway and a list of many other activities, programs and events.
