EU ambassador to US will speak at BYU Nov. 11

Brigham Young University’s David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies will host His Excellency João Vale de Almeida, EU ambassador to the United States, in a lecture Friday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Vale de Almeida represents European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, under the authority of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.

Prior to the Washington appointment, he served as director general for external relations at the European Commission, the EU’s executive body. From 2004 to 2009, Vale de Almeida was the head of cabinet (chief of staff and main advisor) for European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. Earlier in his career, he held several senior positions in the European Commission and worked closely, in different capacities, with former Commission Presidents Jacques Delors, Jacques Santer and Romano Prodi.

Before joining President Barroso's team in 2004, he held a senior position in the Directorate General for Education and Culture and served as deputy chief spokesman of the European Commission, which he joined in 1982 at the European Commission Delegation in Lisbon, after spending seven years as a journalist.

This lecture will be archived at kennedy.byu.edu/archive. For more information, contact Lee Simons at (801) 422-2652 or lee_simons@byu.edu.
