Errol Flynn captivates in screening of 1949 "Don Juan" at BYU Nov. 16

The dashing Errol Flynn appears in a parody of his own Casanova-like image in the colorful film “Adventures of Don Juan” on Friday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in Brigham Young University’s Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium.

The auditorium doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Children ages 8 and older are welcome. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium.

“Adventures of Don Juan” is a lavish 1949 Technicolor movie that plays off of Flynn’s own reputation as a ladies’ man, both on- and off- screen. Viveca Lindfors plays Queen Margaret, Flynn’s love interest, in this tale of 17th century Spain and King Philip III’s plans to build a second armada to fight against England.

Bosley Crowther, a The New York Times film critic, tried to describe the magnificence of the film. “If for no other reason than to take a look at the splash, we suggest you see this picture,” he said. “It is something to remember old Hollywood by.”

The film is part of the continuing BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series, now in its ninth year. The series is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis and Linda Gibson. For more information and a complete season schedule, visit sc.lib.byu.edu.
