Environmentalism and the poor topic for Rob Nixon at BYU Dec. 1

“Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor” will be the lecture topic for Rob Nixon, Rachel Carson Professor of English at University of Wisconsin- Madison, Thursday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. in 239 Herald R. Clark Building at Brigham Young University.

Nixon believes in the value of studying literature from a variety of international, interdisciplinary perspectives in this age of accelerating globalization and advancing climate crisis, and his research interests include creative nonfiction, world literature in English, environmentalism and literature, African and Caribbean literature, and contemporary British literature.

He is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, and his writing has also appeared in the New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Village Voice and London Review of Books. His books include "Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor" (2011) and "Dreambirds: The Natural History of a Fantasy: (2000), which was selected as a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times Book Review and as one of the ten best books of the year by Esquire.

He is affiliated with the Center for Culture, History, and Environment; the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies; Border and Transcultural Studies; and African Studies. Nixon is a past recipient of a Guggenheim, a Fulbright, a MacArthur Foundation Peace and Security Fellowship, and an NEH.
