Ensemble Aleph to perform contemporary music at BYU March 31

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents special guest artists Ensemble Aleph in concert Wednesday, March 31, at 8 p.m. in the Museum of Art auditorium.

The performance is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The concert is funded in part by the Laycock Center for Creative Collaboration in the Arts.

Ensemble Aleph is a contemporary music ensemble from Paris. The concert will feature "la tristesse durera toujours…" ("Sadness Will Last Forever…,") a world premiere by American composer Geoffrey Gordon.

"This is a high-caliber ensemble," said School of Music faculty member Steve Ricks. "It's a real treat to have them visiting campus, because they are heavily involved in the music scene in Paris, one of the cultural centers of the world."

Other works will include music by Cage, Kagel, Xenakis and two members of Ensemble Aleph, Dominique Clement and Jean-Charles François.

Members of the ensemble include Clement (clarinet), François (percussion), Sylvie Drouin (piano, synthesizer and accordion), Monica Jordan (voice), Francoise Matringe (piano) and Christophe Roy (violoncello).

"Not only is the ensemble performing an exciting concert, but they will also be performing and recording works by nine composition students in private reading sessions," Ricks said. "It will be very beneficial for the students to have their works performed live by quality performers."

The ensemble will also participate in percussion and clarinet master classes and a discussion of John Cage's "Aria."
