Engineering professor Larry Howell to discuss faith during devotional June 7

Larry Howell, professor of mechanical engineering, will give the Brigham Young University devotional Tuesday, June 7, at 11 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Howell’s devotional address will be titled “Faith: An Essential Principle of the Gospel.”

The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byub.org. Rebroadcast and archive information will be available at byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu.

Howell was chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at BYU May 2001 to July 2007. Prior to joining BYU in 1994 he was a visiting professor at Purdue University, a finite element analysis consultant for Engineering Methods and an engineer on the design of the YF-22 prototype for the U.S. Air Force F-22. He is also a licensed professional engineer.

A recipient of many awards, Howell has been awarded the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the ASME Design Automation Conference Best Paper Award, the MDI Software Award, the BYU Technology Transfer Award, the Maeser Research Award and the American Society Mechanical Engineers Mechanisms & Robotics Award. He is a Fellow of ASME, past chair of the ASME Mechanisms & Robotics Committee, past co-chair of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and a past associate editor for the Journal of Mechanical Design.

Howell’s research, technical publications and patents focus on compliant mechanisms and microelectromechanical systems. He is the author of “Compliant Mechanisms.”

A native of Portage, Utah, Howell received his doctorate and master’s degree from Purdue University and his bachelor’s degree from BYU, all in mechanical engineering.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
