Elder Bruce C. Hafen to present BYU devotional Feb. 5

Elder Bruce C. Hafen of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will speak at a Brigham Young University devotional on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

Elder Hafen was sustained as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy on April 6, 1996. At the time of his call, Elder Hafen was serving as provost and professor of law at BYU. He has served as president of the Europe Central Area, in the Area Presidencies of the North America Central, Australia/New Zealand, and Pacific areas, as well as in administrative positions in several Church departments. He was president of Ricks College—now BYU-Idaho—for seven years and now serves as Executive Director of the Priesthood Department.

After serving a mission in West Germany, Elder Hafen earned his undergraduate degree from BYU, then his juris doctorate from the University of Utah. After practicing law for four years in Salt Lake City, he became the assistant to the president of BYU where he helped create the J. Reuben Clark Law School. He was a member of the law school’s original faculty, eventually serving as the dean for four years. As a law professor, he became an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of family, educational and constitutional law.
