Edward Friedman to discuss "Don Quixote" at BYU forum Oct. 18

Edward Friedman, professor of Spanish and comparative literature at Vanderbilt University, will speak Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center for a campus forum.

Live broadcasts will be available on KBYU-TV (Channel 11), BYU-Television, KBYU-FM (89.1), BYU-Radio and byubroadcasting.org, as well as on campus in the Joseph Smith Building auditorium and the Varsity Theater in the Wilkinson Student Center. Rebroadcast information is available at www.byubroadcasting.org.

Friedman will visit BYU for the campus-wide celebration of the 400th anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes’ “Don Quixote.”

He will discuss “The Heart of Don Quixote,” which looks at the ways in which Cervantes presented a satirical vision of the protagonist Don Quixote while underscoring his humanity in the novel.

Author of two textbooks, more than 300 articles and several edited collections, Friedman has published books that focus on Cervantes, the picaresque novel and Spanish drama of the 16th and 17th centuries. He has served as editor of three journals, and is currently editor for the “Bulletin of the Comediantes,” devoted to renaissance and baroque theatre in Spain and to colonial Latin American theatre.

Friedman received a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in Spanish and comparative literature. He has also held elected positions in professional organizations, and he is the immediate past president of the Cervantes Society of America.
