Douglas M. Chabries to present BYU devotional May 17

Douglas M. Chabries, former dean of the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology at Brigham Young University, will speak at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center, at a BYU devotional.

Chabries, who has been called to serve a mission with his wife in Croatia for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this fall, will discuss "Developing Our Talents to Make a Contribution to the World."

Live broadcasts of the devotional will be available on KBYU-TV (Channel 11 in most areas), KBYU-FM (89.1), the BYU-Television and BYU-Radio satellite networks and byubroadcasting.org as well as on campus in the Joseph Smith Building auditorium and the Varsity Theater in the Wilkinson Student Center.

Chabries was appointed dean of the BYU College of Engineering and Technology in January 1995. Before his appointment as dean, Chabries served for five years as an assistant academic vice president, where he was responsible for the planning and coordination of computing systems, networks and digital communications on the BYU campus.

He was chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at BYU from 1983 until 1990.

Chabries received his Ph.D. from Brown University. He worked in industry for 12 years for the Naval Undersea Systems Center in California designing acoustic, sonar and detection systems. Since 1978 he has focused his activities at BYU in digital signal processing.

He is the holder of 15 patents and the Governor's Science Medal.
