Douglas Bush to present all-Bach organ recital at BYU March 8

Brigham Young University School of Music professor Douglas Bush will present an all-Bach organ recital Tuesday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome.

"Bach's first major professional position was in the small Thuringian city of Arnstadt where he served as the organist of what is today known as the 'Bach Church' between the years of 1703-07," said Bush. "Several of his compositions from that era survive, and while they evidence the influences of earlier masters, the end result is always uniquely 'Bach.'"

Bush will play several Bach organ pieces, including "Valet will ich dir geben," known to many as the hymn "All Glory Laud and Honor"; "Herzlich tut mich verlangen," which is familiar to local audiences as "O Savior, Thou Who Wearest a Crown"; "Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend," a "pulpit hymn" that was sung as a prayer immediately before the sermon; and "An Wasserflüssen Babylon," which is a five-verse translation of Psalms 137.

Bush teaches fulltime in the School of Music specializing in organ keyboard. He has performed throughout Europe and across the United States, and has conducted a variety of master classes. He is editing an encyclopedia on the organ to be published by Routledge Press in New York City.
