Director of BYU School of Music to speak at July 20 devotional

Dale Monson, director of the School of Music at Brigham Young University, will speak at a campus devotional Tuesday, July 20, at 11:05 a.m. in the Joseph Smith Building auditorium due to construction in the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Overflow seating will be available in W-111 Ezra Taft Benson Building, the Varsity Theater and 2084 Jesse Knight Humanities Building.

The devotional will be broadcast live on KBYU-TV (Channel 11), KBYU-FM (89.1), the BYU-Television and BYU-Radio satellite networks and on byubroadcasting.org.

It will be rebroadcast Sunday, July 25, on BYU-Radio at 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., on KBYU-TV at 6 a.m., on BYU-Television at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and on KBYU-FM at 8 p.m.

Monson has served on the musicology faculties at the University of Michigan, Penn State University and BYU.

He is the director of the Pergolesi Research Center and editor-in-chief of the Pergolesi Complete Works Edition.

Monson's research has focused on 18th century Italian opera, particularly in the study of singers and their influence on the music of opera seria. His other interests include aesthetics, 19th century Romantic literature and Stravinsky.

He studied orchestral conducting and was guest conductor of the Chamber Orchestra at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City and was also assistant conductor at the Lake George Opera Festival and of the orchestras at BYU and Columbia University.
