Derek Marquis named managing director of BYU Broadcasting

Derek Marquis has been named managing director of BYU Broadcasting at Brigham Young University.

BYU Broadcasting oversees the operations of KBYU Television, BYU Television, BYU Television International, KBYU-FM Classical 89, BYU Radio and several Web sites that deliver content internationally.

Marquis first worked at KBYU Television as a student 23 years ago and returned as a full-time employee in 1991. He has overseen the development activities of the organization, has been involved in the development of many television productions and has been instrumental in launching BYU Television International, which will begin serving Central and South America in March.

“Derek has demonstrated considerable abilities over the years as he has managed the various fund-raising activities of BYU Broadcasting, as he has contributed significantly to program development,” said Stephen Jones, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications. “He has helped develop strategy for an organization that, in 1999, served the state of Utah and today reaches 43 million homes in the United States and countless others across the world,”

Before coming to BYU Broadcasting, Marquis worked as a writer, producer and anchor for the Public Affairs Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as a news anchor and reporter for KSL Radio and as news director for KUER Radio in Salt Lake City.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from BYU in 1988 and an MBA from BYU in 2003. He is the author of “Till Debt Due Us Part,” a guide to personal finance, and is the author and instructor of a BYU Independent Study course by the same name.

“I am both honored and humbled to be given this opportunity,” Marquis said. “Over the past few years, BYU Broadcasting has achieved a global reach and has become a vital tool for both the university and the Church of Jesus Christ, with its ability to deliver content via television, radio, the Internet, and other new technologies. The next few years are a time of great challenges and exciting opportunities as we continue to expand the reach of BYU Broadcasting and as we develop more and better content for the many audiences we serve.”
