Brigham Young University's David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies is sponsoring a pair of globally focused lectures Thursday, Nov. 11:
• Carey Cavanaugh, director of the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky, will discuss "See Evil, Hear Evil, Speak to Evil: Engaging America’s Enemies" at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.
Cavanaugh became director of the Patterson School in 2006 having returned to academia after a 22-year diplomatic career with the U.S. Department of State centered on conflict resolution, political-military affairs and humanitarian issues. In addition to Washington assignments in the State Department, the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, Cavanaugh served in Berlin, Moscow, Tbilisi, Rome and Bern. His final government assignment was foreign policy/political advisor to U.S. Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Mike Mullen, the current chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
He received a bachelor's degree in Russian from the University of Florida and a master's degree in government and international affairs from the University of Notre Dame, with additional graduate work at Notre Dame and the U.S. Army Russian Institute in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and London's International Institute for Strategic Studies.
• "Gabrielle Roy in Translation" will be the lecture topic for Jane Everett, Dean of Students at Montreal's McGill University, at 4 p.m. in B037 Joseph F. Smith Building.
Everett is an associate professor in the Département de langue et littérature françaises at McGill, where she teaches Québec francophone literature and translation. A founding member of the Groupe de recherche sur Gabrielle Roy, Everett has edited the letters that Roy exchanged with one of her translators, the English-Canadian writer Joyce Marshall.
Her current research focuses on the anthologisation of Roy’s works in French and in English.
