David M. Kennedy Center hosts variety of guest lecturers March 8

The Brigham Young University David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies will host three guest speakers Thursday, March 8, at different times places throughout campus.

CFR Academic Conference Call:  Sheila A. Smith, a senior fellow for Japan studies, will present "Japan: One Year Later" at 10 a.m. in 257 Herald R. Clark Building. The lecture is part of a series of hour-long conference calls that are teleconferenced discussions sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations.

• Islamic Art Lecture: In conjunction with the opening of the BYU Museum of Art's exhibit of Islamic art, BYU has invited Islamic art historian Sheila Blair of Boston College to deliver a lecture to faculty and students at 11 a.m. in B092 Joseph F. Smith Building.  The title of Blair's address will be "East Meets West in Iran under the Mongols." 

Blair received a doctorate in art history from Harvard University (1980) and teaches about all aspects of Islamic art from the 7th century to modern times. Blair has written or co-written 15 books, including several international award winners, and more than two hundred articles in journals, encyclopedias, colloquia, andfestschriften.

Environmental Ethics Initiative Lecture: Naomi Orekes, a professor of history and science studies at the University of California-San Diego, will present "Merchants of Doubt" at 4 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Oreskes received her doctorate in geological research and the history of science from Stanford University. She has primarily been interested in the problem of anthropogenic climate change. She has lectured widely in diverse venues ranging from the Madison, Wisconsin Civics Club to the Air Force Research Laboratory, and has won numerous prizes.
