David Hart to deliver Barker Lecture in Language and Linguistics Nov. 9

David Hart, a professor of Russian at Brigham Young University, will deliver the 2006-2007 James L. Barker Lecture in Language and Linguistics on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. in B092 Joseph F. Smith Building.

He will discuss “L4: Lifelong Language Learning,” which will describe methods and materials for helping graduates maintain and develop their foreign language abilities.

“Students often leave the university with a good ability to speak a language, but within a few years that ability starts to decay,” said Hart. His presentation will teach listeners how to reduce the chances of that decay.

The lectureship is named in honor of James L. Barker (1880-1958), an internationally renowned scholar in phonetics and former chairman of BYU’s Language Department (1907-1914). He was honored for his work in phonetics by the French government, and studied at the University of Neuchatel, the College de France and the Sorbonne.
