Mitchell will now perform on Sept. 3; Individual ticket sales begin Aug. 2
The Brigham Young University College of Fine Arts and Communications has announced its 2010-2011 Performing Arts Season featuring prominent guest artists from around the world.
Most performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Season ticket packages are now available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or byuarts.com.
On Friday, Sept. 3, Tony Award-winning Broadway singer-actor Brian Stokes Mitchell will be performing at the de Jong Concert Hall. Mitchell has starred as Don Quixote in “Man of La Mancha” and Fred Graham in “Kiss Me, Kate” and created the role of Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the original cast of “Ragtime.” Mitchell performed as a guest soloist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s annual Christmas concert in 2008. Single ticket sales begin Aug. 2.
The season will continue with sitar master Ustad Nishat Khan Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the de Jong Concert Hall. Khan is a member of one of India’s most renowned musical families. His family has been performing for nearly 400 years. His classical Indian music has been heard across the world and even earned him a U.S. Congressional Award for Contribution to Culture and Community. Individual tickets go on sale Aug. 23.
“The Cashore Marionettes” will be at BYU Sept. 23-25 in the Pardoe Theatre. In this performance, Joseph Cashore will present his collection of marionette masterworks. The show is a series of scenes taken from everyday life and set to beautiful music by composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi, Strauss and Copland. Single ticket sales begin Aug. 23.
“Jigu! Thunder Drums of China” will be at BYU Tuesday, Oct. 26, in the de Jong Concert Hall. Jigu (Chinese for “to beat or touch the drum”) was founded in 1988 in Shanxi Providence of the People’s Republic of China. Shanxi has one of the oldest traditions of drumming passed on from generation to generation. In fact, some of the oldest drums have been unearthed in archaeological digs in Shanxi. The group has performed its unique drumming around the world, including performances in the U.S., Canada, Denmark, Morocco, Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Individual tickets go on sale Sept. 27.
One of the country’s leading chamber music ensembles, the Avalon String Quartet, will perform Oct. 28-29 in the Madsen Recital Hall. The quartet is described by The Chicago Tribune as “an ensemble that invites you — ears, mind and spirit — into its music.” The group has performed in many major halls, including Alice Tully Hall in New York, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress and the Herculessal in Munich, Germany. Individual ticket sales begin Sept. 27.
The Utah Symphony will perform Thursday, Nov. 18, in the de Jong Concert Hall. The symphony will be directed by Stanislaw Skrawaczewski and will perform Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9. Skrawaczewski’s interpretations of Bruckner symphonies have earned him the Gold Medal of the Mahler-Bruckner Society. Single tickets go on sale Oct. 18.
To start off winter semester at BYU, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will be performing Friday, Jan. 21, in the Madsen Recital Hall. The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center hails from New York’s Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, which has received acclaim as the world’s most exciting new venue for chamber music. They will be performing pieces by Beethoven, Jalbert and Brahms. Individual ticket sales begin Dec. 6.
Circo Aereo will be performing Tuesday, Feb. 15, in the de Jong Concert Hall. Under the direction of Maksim Komaro and Jani Nuutinen, Finland’s Circo Aereo is widely recognized throughout Europe as a pioneer of New Circus. This beautiful “theater without words” mixes traditional circus arts such as juggling and aerial work with cabaret theater, movement and charming humor. This will mark only the second time that the group has come to America. Single ticket sales begin Dec. 6.
Chanticleer’s unique “orchestra of voices” will be at BYU Tuesday, March 1, in the de Jong Concert Hall. This men’s a cappella chorus was hailed as “one of the world’s best” by The San Francisco Chronicle for its seamless blend of 12 male singers. They sing original interpretations of everything from Renaissance music and jazz to gospel and new music. Individual tickets go on sale Jan. 31.
The Utah Symphony will be returning to BYU Thursday, March 3, in the de Jong Concert Hall performing a “Romantics Concert” with pieces by Robert and Clara Schumann. Robert’s “Second Symphony” will be performed, along with Clara’s “Piano Concerto,” which she wrote when she was just 14 years old. Single tickets go on sale Jan. 31.
One of the oldest and most celebrated dance companies in America, the Martha Graham Dance Company, will be at BYU March 22-24 in the de Jong Concert Hall. The company, founded in 1926, has been hailed as “one of the great companies of the world” by The New York Times. This performance is part of the company’s 81st anniversary season and will include classic performances from the Martha Graham repertoire. Individual ticket sales begin Feb. 22.
Dr. Seuss’ beloved stories will collide on stage in Theatreworks USA’s production of “Seussical” May 13-14 in the de Jong Concert Hall. Adapted from the Broadway theatre version and presented by New York’s professional children’s touring theatre, this production will present a number of Dr. Seuss characters intertwined in an incredible adventure to save the planet of Who. Single ticket sales begin April 4.
