Darrell Babidge, Jennifer Welch-Babidge in BYU recital Jan. 8

Husband-and-wife duo and Brigham Young University School of Music faculty members Darrell Babidge and Jennifer Welch-Babidge will appear in recital Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Harris Fine Arts Center Madsen Recital Hall.

The all-baroque program will feature works by Handel and J.S. Bach, including selections from Handel’s opera “Giulio Cesare.” Admission is free.

Praised by the New York Times for her “authority, agility and bright-toned beauty,” Jennifer Welch-Babidge has performed across the United States, including engagements at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera and San Francisco Opera.

Darrell Babidge has appeared as featured soloist at Carnegie Hall in performances of Faure’s “Requiem” and Mozart’s “Coronation Mass.” He also performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall in London.

The singers will be assisted by BYU Philharmonic Orchestra members Julie Beistline, Gina Roper, John Kovalenko, Natasha Li and Joe Nibley, as well as BYU professors Christian Smith, Douglas Bush, Geralyn Giovanetti and Laurence Lowe.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
